Centres for Arbitration and Mediation Project

The Basics: As a peacebuilding field worker with the human rights non-governmental organization Global Conscience Initiative, I developed and coordinated activities to strengthen the mediation and governance capacity of village councils. These activities included workshops on alternate dispute resolution and transparent budgeting, governance mentorship of individual councilors, and the commemoration ceremony for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Locations: South West Region, Cameroon

Funder: None

Implementing Partners: Village leadership, Lake Site Radio

Timeframe: August 2011 – December 2011

Project Accomplishments:

  • I directly mentored and capacity-built 1 village chief, focusing on good governance and protection of access to justice.
  • I trained 14 members of the village traditional council on transparent budgeting, mediation procedure and practices, the Cameroonian judicial system, and the protection of minority rights.
  • I reached about 50 village members with messaging on human rights, arbitration, and access to justice.
  • I ran Human Rights Hour, a weekly radio show on human rights and access to justice, reaching villages across the South West Region of Cameroon.
